Do you want to know the Alcatraz of Central America? Well, in Costa Rica is San Lucas Island, a small island measuring approximately 500 hectares, located in the Gulf of Nicoya and better known as the Alcatraz of Central America. For more than 100 years it witnessed brutal mistreatment and punishment, finally closing its doors in 1992, it is now a Wildlife Refuge and National Heritage Site.
We head to Puntarenas to take the boat that will take us to San Lucas Island sailing the Gulf of Nicoya. Once there, our guides will take you on a tour of the facilities of the old Penitentiary, to see the Administration building, the Church, maximum, medium and minimum security cells, as well as the punishment areas.
After enjoying a delicious lunch you will have the opportunity to visit the beautiful "Roma" beach located 800 meters from the pier of the island, a place to rest, sunbathe or just enjoy a game of beach.
On the way back to Puntarenas you will be able to observe some beaches such as: Playa El Ingles, Tumbabote, Manzanillo, Hacienda Vieja, Limon and Playa El Coco, as well as the islands: Guayabo, Isla de Aves, Zopilote and Pan de Azucar.
